Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Dhawan pair up for the first time for Nitesh Tiwari's Bawaal. The two have been teasing fans with snippets of their upcoming movie. On July 5, the makers dropped the teaser, and on Sunday, they unveiled the trailer for Bawaal. While it looks intriguing, the trailer has also left many fans and Twitter users questioning the storyline of the movie.
Bawaal draws a comparison between Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Dhawan's love story and World War II. Similar questions were raised by fans and moviegoers as soon as the trailer was dropped.
Fans react to the Bawaal trailer
The trailer for Bawaal somehow tries to establish a connection with the menacing Adolf Hitler. Varun Dhawan hails from a small town and marries Janhvi Kapoor. The two have nothing in common. They set off on an adventure to explore Europe and visit Paris and other cities. These places were the centers of World War II.
The brutal historical event is used as a reference in the Bawaal trailer as the characters speak of the 'world war within themselves.' This led to mixed reactions from fans.
One user wrote, "I just saw the trailer for Bawaal, and what is this obsession of Indians with Hitler? I don't get it. What do you mean by 'hum sabke thode Hitler ke jaise hi hai (we are all like Hitler, a little bit)'? He almost wipes out an ethnicity. How are me and Hitler similar?"
Another one added, "What the f**k was the #bawaal trailer? Love story me Hitler ka angle kaha se aya (how is the love story related to Hitler?)" One tweet read, "If Bawaal uses the Holocaust as some weird metaphor for a broken marriage, it's a sign that modern film directors have lost the plot."

One fan wrote, "After the trailer, I'm even more intrigued by how they will link the story to WWII. There are parallel stories from the past and present, but I'm confused with the tonality shifts or parallels made between some personal problems of the young couple and Hitler's aspirations."
Director Nitesh Tiwari on Bawaal
The brain and vision behind the movie, director Nitesh Tiwari, opened up after the trailer for Bawaal was unveiled. He says this is an Indian movie that will appeal to audiences across the globe.
"Great love stories deserve to be experienced, and they always find a medium to reach an audience. Over the years, some of these stories have become true epics, not because of their grandiose scale but because of their heart-stringing, gut-wrenching essence that makes the audience feel every emotion. Bawaal is an Indian film that will appeal to audiences across the world," said Tiwari.
He further added, "It will make you feel the jitters of nervousness, the joy of togetherness, the pain of separation, and so much more. Varun and Janhvi have brilliantly portrayed the roles of Ajju and Nisha, taking you on a journey from small-town India to Europe that will leave an indelible mark on your hearts and minds."
Bawaal releases on July 21 on Amazon Prime Video.
