FIR Launched Against Ranveer Allahbadia Over India’s Got Latent Controversy

Guwahati Police have registered an FIR against several well-known YouTubers following a complaint filed by a resident of the city. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the action on Monday evening. The FIR includes popular content creators such as BeerBiceps' Ranveer Allahbadia, Ashish Chanchlani, stand-up comedian Samay Raina, Jaspreet Singh, and Apoorva Makhija. They have been accused of allegedly promoting obscenity and engaging in sexually explicit discussions on the show India's Got Latent.

Legal Charges and Concerns Over Public Morality

The FIR has been filed under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, specifically sections 79, 95, 294, and 296. Additionally, Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000, has been invoked, along with provisions from the Cinematograph Act of 1952 and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986. These charges highlight concerns over the influence of such content on public morality, particularly its impact on younger audiences who closely follow these digital creators.

The controversy has gained further traction as Bombay High Court advocates Ashish Ray and Pankaj Mishra have written to Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phalsankar and the Maharashtra Women's Commission, urging legal action against the remarks made on the show. Their petition emphasises that the content disrespects women and promotes inappropriate narratives.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also addressed the controversy, stating, 'I have been informed about this, though I have not watched it yet. I came to know that it was very vulgar, and this was wrong. Everyone has freedom of speech, but this freedom ends when we encroach upon others' freedom. Everyone has limits if anyone crosses them, action will be taken.' His statement suggests that the issue could lead to further legal scrutiny.

The India's Got Latent Controversy

The controversy centres around Ranveer Allahbadia, popularly known as BeerBiceps, and his participation in Samay Raina's show, India's Got Latent. The show was launched on YouTube in June 2024. It features contestants showcasing their talent before being grilled by a panel of judges, including Raina and guest creators.

During one of the episodes, Allahbadia allegedly asked a contestant an inappropriate and explicit question, which sparked widespread outrage on social media. Other prominent creators featured on the show included Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, and Apoorva Makhija, also known as "The Rebel Kid."

Apology from Ranveer Allahbadia

Following the backlash, Ranveer Allahbadia, 31, issued a public apology. In a video statement, he acknowledged his mistake, saying, 'I shouldn't have said what I said on India's Got Latent. I'm sorryhellip My comment wasn't just inappropriate it was not even funny. Comedy is not my forte I am just here to say sorry.' Despite his apology, the controversy continues to gain momentum, with legal proceedings now in motion.
