Irrfan Khan Death Anniversary: Piku Director Shoojit Sircar Pens Heartfelt Note

The world of cinema felt a profound loss with the passing of the exceptionally talented Irrfan Khan. On his fifth death anniversary, April 29th, filmmaker Shoojit Sircar, who directed Irrfan in the much-loved film Piku, shared a deeply moving tribute. His heartfelt note, posted alongside behind-the-scenes pictures from the film set, paints a vivid picture of their cherished friendship and the void Irrfan left behind.

A Friendship Remembered

Sircar fondly recalled intimate moments shared with the late actor. He reminisced about their simple joys, like enjoying snacks together. Addressing Irrfan directly, Sircar wrote about the actor's enduring charm.

"Friend, wherever you are, I know you're doing well and have probably made many new friends there. I'm sure people have fallen in love with your charm, as we all have," Sircar shared. He poignantly added, "Here, I'm doing fine. But there's one thing you might not be aware of Irfaan - just how much you're loved and missed here. You'd be surprised." The director specifically missed their casual hangouts, stating, "I miss our jhal muri sessions and the laughter we shared."

Their connection went beyond casual chats. Sircar recalled profound discussions they shared. "Your discussions on the magic of life were always fascinating. I cherish those moments," he wrote. He specifically mentioned their talks while Irrfan was undergoing treatment in London: "Remember our long conversations about spiritualism and science when you were in London? Those talks were incredibly deep."

These conversations clearly left a lasting mark. "I've got the books you recommended, and I often think about our discussions on life and death," Sircar admitted. The personal loss remains palpable for the director. "Your smile and those mystical eyes of yours are etched in my memory. It's not easy living every day without you there's a huge vacuum," he expressed candidly.

In his note, Sircar also offered reassurance about Irrfan's family. He mentioned looking out for Irrfan's sons, Babil and Ayan. "Irfaan, I wanted to let you know that Babil and Ayan are doing well," he wrote. He shared a special bond with Babil: "Babil and I play football together, and I've become a bit of a guardian to him. Don't worry I'm looking out for him."

Sircar also mentioned his collaboration with Babil on a film project, noting, "He's growing into a fine artist, slowly carving his own space in the industry. I'm sure he's on the right path, just like you always envisioned."

Sircar's tribute resonated deeply within the industry, with actors like Richa Chadha commenting, "Cinema misses him," while Rasika Dugal, Banita Sandhu, and Bhumi Pednekar shared heart emojis.

Irrfan Khan passed away on April 29, 2020, after a courageous battle with a neuroendocrine tumour. His collaboration with Sircar on Piku (2015), alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone, remains a highlight in Indian cinema.

Concluding his touching message, Sircar wrote, "I know you're watching over us from wherever you are, and that's a comfort. There's so much to talk about, but for now, I'll just say adieu, friend. Lots of love." Sircar's words serve as a poignant reminder of Irrfan's enduring influence, both personally and professionally.
