Ahead of assembly elections in five prominent states and the 2024 general elections, the Election Commission (EC) will appoint Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao as the National Icon of the EC. The actor's portrayal in Newton of an official tasked with conducting polls in the Naxal-affected areas of Chattisgarh won him several accolades as well as making him the right candidate to become the face of the Election Commission.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar will appoint Rajkummar Rao as the National Icon of the EC on Thursday in a formal ceremony. The actor has not only given some incredible performances but also connected well with the youth.

This makes it easier for the government to connect with today's generation to motivate them to vote. Rajkummar will not only be the face of the Election Commission but also motivate the voters to recognize their right to vote.

He played a similar character in Newton, a movie that went on to win the National Award, where he conducted fair and free elections.

This is not the first time EC has decided to appoint a known persona as the national icon. Previously, popular celebrities and sportspersons like Pankaj Tripathi, Aamir Khan, Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, and Mary Kom have joined hands with the Election Commission, thus motivating the voters to know their right to vote.

When are the five-state assembly elections?

The assembly elections will begin in November. The five states where the elections will be held are Mizoram, Chattisgarh, Telangana, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.

In an announcement, the EC said Mizoram will vote on November 7, while elections in Chattisgarh, which sees a 90-member assembly, will be held in two phases on November 7 and 17.

Madhya Pradesh and Telangana will go to the polls on November 17 and 30, respectively. As for Rajasthan, the state will vote for assembly elections on November 25. Earlier, the state was scheduled to go to the polls on November 23.

The final votes will be counted on December 3.
