Canadian rapper Tommy Genesis has sparked a significant online firestorm after releasing her latest music video, 'True Blue.' The artist is facing accusations of cultural and religious insensitivity for visuals that many believe mock both Hindu and Christian beliefs, leading to widespread calls for the video's removal.
What is 'True Blue' All About?
'True Blue' is a track from the rapper's upcoming album, Genesis. However, its music video, which premiered on Saturday, has become the centre of a heated debate. In the video, Tommy Genesis appears in blue body paint, a golden bikini and jewellery, stilettos, and a bindi. This look, netizens claim, offensively resembles the Hindu goddess Maa Kali. The controversy is further fuelled by scenes where she provocatively licks a crucifix, a gesture that has been widely condemned as disrespectful by the Christian community. The backlash was swift and severe. Social media platforms were flooded with comments from enraged viewers. 'Appropriating Hindu culture has become a trend among these so-called Westerners. My culture isn't your aesthetic (sic)," one user wrote. Another expressed their disappointment, stating, 'Man, I'm so disappointed with what you did with that cross in the video. That's just straight-up disrespectful - and I'm not only talking about the licking (sic).'
The criticism wasn't limited to the general public. Indian rapper Raftaar took to his Instagram Stories to denounce the video. He urged his followers to report the content on YouTube, sharing a screenshot of his own report which stated, 'This is a mockery of my religion. This shouldn't exist.'

The overwhelming sentiment online is that the video is a blatant disregard for sacred symbols. A particularly powerful comment read, 'Using Maa Kali as some edgy aesthetic? Disgusting. She's not a costume... This isn't art, it's mockery.'Despite her Indian heritagemdashher real name is Genesis Yasmine Mohanrajmdashthe rapper's creative choices have been seen as a cheap publicity stunt. Demands for the video's removal are growing, with comments like, 'DELETE THIS VIDEO,' and 'Kindly remove the reel,' dominating her social media. One user urged her politely, saying, 'This is very unpleasant, @tommygenesis... You can not disrespect people sentiments.. Still got time , Remove it' As of now, Tommy Genesis has not responded to the controversy.
