RC Exclusive: Comedian Atul Khatri Opens Up On India`s Got Latent Controversy

One of the leading comedians who changed the narrative of comedy in India, Atul Khatri, continues to thrive in his fifties with his recent special, Well Trained. The CEO-turned-comedian sat down with Radio City for a rather candid chat where he opened up about his journey to becoming a stand-up comedian, today's stance on comedy in India, and much more.

For the uninitiated, Atul Khatri started his comedy journey in 2011 alongside his full-time job as a CEO. He used to discuss numbers and spreadsheets in the morning and make people go LOL in the evening.

In an exclusive interview with Radio City, the comedian also opened up on India's Got Latent controversy, where Samay Raina and Ranveer Allahabadia got into major legal trouble due to the use of misappropriated statements.

When asked about his thoughts on how audiences and situations have changed when it comes to perceiving comedy in India, Khatri said writing and performing a set have become even more strategic and mindful today.

"Sometimes, an uproar or a controversy around comedy is either politically backed or, at times, social media just hypes it up. For instance, some show (India's Got Latent) is garnering popularity, so let's go after it and make a huge scene out of it. The two boys (Samay and Ranveer) didn't even intend for it to become such a huge issue," he said.

The YouTuber further added, "I have been on the show twice. One episode aired, and another will never see the light of day. There are many other important issues to be focused on, like damaged roads, pollution, etc. But somehow, only a random statement made by a comedian becomes a national issue. It does not make sense to me."

He also spoke about how instances from his personal life inspire him to draw out content that becomes highly relatable, even to today's audience.

"I travel somewhere and experience something which could potentially be a joke. And when I perform it, the audience would be nodding their heads in agreement, as something similar must have happened with them too. So you need to find that one hook to make people laugh, and once you get your first laugh, it gives you a high like no other," the comedian explained.
