In an era where digital wizardry often takes centre stage, the art of crafting magnificent, tangible film sets is far from obsolete. Visionary director SS Rajamouli is pushing the envelope once again with his upcoming magnum opus, tentatively titled SSMB29. Reports are swirling that a single set for the film has been constructed with a staggering budget of 50 crore, making it the most expensive set in the history of Indian cinema.
This monumental undertaking sees the filmmaker, known for his larger-than-life cinematic worlds, recreating the ancient city of Varanasi in Hyderabad. While Indian films increasingly rely on VFX and CGI, this massive, practical set demonstrates that some directors still believe in the authentic grandeur that only physical construction can provide.

For a major schedule of the pan-India adventure starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran, Rajamouli has chosen to build a detailed replica of Varanasi's iconic ghats and temples. The decision stems from the logistical challenges of filming in the bustling, sacred city. A source close to the unit confirms, "As it is tough to shoot in the real location, Rajamouli has asked his team to construct a key portion of Varanasi in Ramoji Film City."Leaked images from the construction site showcase the breathtaking scale of the set against the Hyderabad skyline. According to insiders, the cost has touched 50 crore, a figure that overshadows the entire budgets of many blockbuster films. To put this into perspective, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's opulent "Devdas," once India's most expensive movie, was made on a total budget of less than 50 crore.

A League of Its Own
While other productions have boasted extravagant sets, none have reached this colossal figure for a single structure. Films like "Bajirao Mastani," "Heeramandi," "Baahubali," and "Thugs of Hindostan" saw their biggest sets costing in the range of 15-20 crore. The legendary kotha in "Devdas" itself was built for 12 crore back in 2002. Rajamouli's latest venture effortlessly surpasses these previous benchmarks, setting a new standard for production design in the country. The film, described as a fantasy action-adventure, is already one of the most anticipated projects. With a rumoured Ramayana connection, where Mahesh Babu's character embarks on a global quest for a mythical medicinal herb, the ambition is palpable. This massive Varanasi set will reportedly be the backdrop for crucial scenes, including a major action sequence.
While the 50 crore set is a testament to Rajamouli's commitment to authenticity, the film will also feature extensive VFX, with top Hollywood studios contributing to the visual effects. As two schedules of the film have already been completed and the team prepares for a shoot in Kenya, the scale of SSMB29 promises a cinematic experience of unprecedented grandeur.
