In a day and age, where the need to beautify and keep your environment clean is the call of the hour, Mumbai-based lawyer and environmentalist Afroz Shah is giving back to his city, despite keeping a fast during the holy month of Ramzan.
Shah, a 36-year old lawyer and rightly hailed as Mumbai’s ocean warrior took on a drive to cleanse up the Versova Beach over a period of 80-90 weeks. More than five million tons of waste have been cleared from the beach. Shah’s constant efforts coupled with rapid support from enthusiastic patriots around Versova, helped the tourist attraction transform itself from a place, once known to be filthy.
Shah is also the recipient of the Champion of the Earth Award, which was bestowed upon him by the United Nations Environment Programme, for his efforts. He has been congratulated by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his endeavor and his initiative has drawn support from actors Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Randeep Hooda.
RJ Archana of Radio City 91.1 FM caught up with the lawyer-environmentalist on account of World Environment Day at the Twitter Blue Room following an on-air interview for her show ‘Kasa Kai Mumbai’, where Afroz spoke about how he does not want to be mistaken for an aspiring politician or activist in lieu for his social services and how open defecation has vastly depleted from the city.
