Few bite the dust and eventually rise from the ashes. Siddharth Basrur, a profound name in the indie independent scene is a standing testimony of that resolve. Having dabbled across advertising jingles and films, Siddharth aka Sid B has treaded the path to success with enough gusto since the time he began as a musician with his band, Kinky Ski Munky.Team Radio City Freedom caught up with the placid musician for a quick chat.Tell us about your latest collaboration, 'Losing Day' with Mumbai based singer-songwriter Jishnu Guha aka Short Round.Siddharth: Jishnu and I have been playing music together for a while. He, along with Adil Kurwa and Zain Calcuttawala helped me make 'Chasing Rain Chapter 1 2' what they are. We39d recorded a version of 39Losing Day39, ages ago, but never got to release it. So when Jishnu moved back from the US, he decided that it should be re-recorded, and this time, a little differently.In the recent months you've sung for 'Hebbuli', a Kannada film and 'FU', a Marathi film that stars 'Sairat's Akash Thosar. Do you feel regional cinema is far more malleable when it comes to experimenting with newer sounds and fresher voices?Siddharth: It was a great experience, working with working with music composers, Arjun Janya and Vishal Mishra for these songs. Both of them were pretty heavy tracks, but I39ve also done similar work in Bollywood, such as 39Parwah Nahin39 for 'MS Dhoni: The Untold Story', and 39Meri Zidd39 from 'Bangistan'. More and more music composers and film directors are looking for new sounds, which is definitely a good thing, as it gives people like me, a chance to be involved with interesting projects.'We are living in a time and age where depression and anxiety is omnipresent. As a survivor of substance abuse yourself, how would you advise one to hold themselves in these testing times?Siddharth: I got professional help, as I was incapable of helping myself. And whatever I went through, definitely made me a lot stronger, which is why I feel like I39m in such a good place, today. What also helps me, is constantly doing stuff that I love.In an interview to us, Mohan and Koco of Agnee addressed that independent artistes should not perform for free. Your thoughts?Siddharth: I agree. I39ve done the odd gig for a good cause, for free. But at the end of the day, I39m an artiste, and if I don39t attach value to my work, why should others. That39s how the vicious cycle begins. Start doing shit for free or cheap, and that39s who you become a guy who does free and cheap gigs.Lastly, three independent talents you are rooting for?Siddharth: Samar Mehdi is a very talented songwriter, and I39ve been following his work for the last couple of months, and he39s been consistently putting out fresh material. Can39t wait to see what else he has up his sleeve.The Circus has really upped their game with their last record, and I really want to listen to more from them, soon.I39ve been a fan of Mosko, ever since I first saw them, a few years ago.
