The terrific trio of 'Raman Raghav 2.0' met the team of Radio City for an exclusive chat. Watch out for some candid confessions from director Anurag Kashyap and actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Vicky Kaushal.Vicky why is the film 'Raman Raghav 2.0'? There wasn't a first part really, right?Vicky: Actually, it is a contemporary version of the actual story which is why we have the title as such. So everyone at Phantom were happy with the title and Anurag sir wrote the script in three days. That's how everything was finalized. This is a grey character unlike your sweet roles that you've last played? How was that?Vicky: Yes, this is a grey-shaded character. He is a cop but he does all the things that are against the book of law. He is temperamental and abuses drugs but he is honest and upright in his job.Your film was well received at the Cannes Film Festival, this year, yet you had to audition for the role?Vicky: Point is that Anurag sir knows me since his 'Black Friday' days as dad Sham Kaushal was the action director on the film. So whenever they used to meet with reference to the film, it would always be during breakfast. Since we are a Punjabi family, we would have aloo parathas for breakfast. So I would serve Anurag sir and I used to call him uncle at that time. So he has watched me grow up as a person which is why he could never see the grey-areas of the character in me. He told me that he was considering three actors for the role and I was one of them. But I had to give an audition for him to be convinced. So I got five days for it and I made up my mind saying that I need this. The casting director Mukesh Chhabra took my audition and gave me two scenes to enact. I gave the audition and got finalized within two hours. But we have to know, how did you prepare yourself for the role of Raghavan?Vicky: Raghavan is a dark, temperamental and finicky character. He is also an insomniac and he has no idea how can he behave. He is on an edge but he channelizes his energies in his work. Sometimes when you choose roles, you choose them because you connect with one or two traits of the character. I was nothing like Raghavan so I had to prepare myself to be that. So I went to another house that we have and I locked myself up for five days. The days seemed very long as I had no source of entertainment except my script. So I prepared somehow and gave the audition. As I was returning from the audition, I got a call from the office saying that Anurag sir wants to meet me. We met and he started talking about the other scenes from the film and suddenly broke it to me that I've been casted. I was rejoicing because ever since I've assisted him on 'Gangs of Wasseypur', I've always wanted to work with him.Nawaz, we hear that while enacting Ramanna, you drifted to a negative space yourself. Is this true?Nawazuddin: Every character has a philosophy and a perception towards life. So unless and until you don't step into their shoes, you wouldn't know. With me, the lines between right and wrong were blurred in my earlier days so that is what I tried to bring in the character. What special preparation did you go through to play the character so convincingly?Nawazuddin: For me, it is about getting into the skin of my character. Infact, I was once even enacting while I was sick. So my wife got worried.Eight of your movies have been to the Cannes. Don't the West now get scared of you?Nawazuddin: Not really. I feel happy as long as they appreciate my work.Vicky, did you ever think that you could come so far in terms of pursuing a career in acting?Vicky: I actually wanted to be an actor so I decided to take up assistant direction to understand the nuances of filmmaking. So for me, 'Gangs of Wasseypur' was truly an enriching experience. Because they were many great actors who inspired me and lead me to this path. How was it working with each other?Vicky: not once did he make me feel intimidated or any of that. We were doing our scenes together for the first time and unless an AD did not tell us that our shot is ready, it did not strike me that I was working with him from being an AD myself. He is that humble as an actor.Nawazuddin: When I saw 'Masaan' I was shocked. I wondered where he was kept hidden because I know him to be a very honest and hard-working lad. So I was happy to shoot with him.Nawaz, how do you feel to work with Anurag Kashyap every time since you share a great relationship?Nawazuddin: It is always an unexpected and unpredictable feeling when he offers me roles. But I like how he pushes my boundaries as an actor which is challenging.Anurag, do you make a film keeping in mind that it should go to the western audiences?Anurag: No, I don't think at it that way. When I make a film, I feel that it should reach the maximum audiences possible. So it all started with Slumdog Millionaire when festival heads came to India and met me and took my movies Dev D and Gulaal with them. So the tryst with festivals started with that.We believe that Danny Boyle was inspired when he saw your films?Anurag: He is a very humble man and very dedicated to his craft. I wanted to meet him and learn some techniques of filmmaking from him which I wanted to use for 'Dev D'. I remember while planning the meeting, he called me back and said that he cannot make it as he was fixing the leaking pipe in his house. Whereas we would go mad if anything goes wrong in our house. So who all have you met at Cannes so far?Anurag: Irrespective of who we meet, let me tell you that they are far more humble than us.Any problem with censorship or any of that on 'Raman Raghav 2.0'?Anurag: We were told only two changes which we obliged to and we have been cleared for release. Why do we always have to put up disclaimers for our movies always?Anurag: Because we are a soft target. We don't stand up together which I'm glad has changed with 'Udta Punjab'.Anurag what would you like to tell the aspiring director who look upto you?Anurag: Nobody owes it to you. You owe it to yourself. So if you decide to take a path, be prepared for comes with it. So make your choices wisely and see it through.Your message to your readersVicky: It is a very hard-hitting film which is true to the tagline which is madness meets mayhem. So please watch the film when it releases on June 24th.
