Superboys of Malegaon director Reema Kagti recalls keema samosa incident
One of the most unique and awaited films, Superboys of Malegaon, hits the theatres today. Helmed by Reema Kagti and produced by Zoya Akhtar, the versatile duo is back, giving us stories that you didn`t know you needed.
While we all know Kagti`s talent for storytelling, it was in Superboys of Malegaon that Vineet Kumar Singh, who is one of the leads in the film, highlighted her attention to detail.
In an interview with the Hindustan Times, Reema Kagti shared a rather interesting anecdote on how one plate of samosas had her ADs do extra work during the shooting of the film.
Recalling a particular incident, the filmmaker said, "As a prop, we had keema samosas. We were rehearsing, so we didn`t place the food. Suddenly, for the first take, I saw a plate of Punjabi samosas coming in, and they were placed in the frame."

"I yelled, `These are Punjabi samosas and not keema samosas.`. It was a night shoot. So the art department and some of the ADs had to run to the kitchen and start making keema samosas," she said, adding, "But you have to get it right."
Superboys of Malegaon is based on the true story of Nasir Shaikh and his other amateur filmmaker friends in the sleepy town of Malegaon. It is partially inspired by the ary Supermen of Malegaon.
Talking about taking cinematic liberties to add fictional elements in the film, Reema said, "We haven`t made up anything. It may not be historically accurate, or we may have combined a person or two together. We have taken those kinds of liberties, but everything is taken from his life."
There has been a lot of chatter in and out of the industry about a critically acclaimed film to see a theatrical release in the post-Covid environment, which only believes big films with popular faces will succeed.
When asked the same, Reema Kagti reacted, "I find that very reductionist," and added, "Eventually, it is about doing good work. Yes, there`s a commercial aspect to it. But filmmaking is art."
"When you put terms like these, it is very reductive. Any film, whether it`s a big blockbuster or an alternative film, if it has good word of mouth, has rarely not done well. I think that is important," she concluded.
Superboys of Malegaon stars Adarsh Gourav, Vineet Kumar Singh, and Shashank Arora. Anuj Singh Duhan, Muskkaan Jaferi, and Riddhi Kumar. Produced by Zoya Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani, and Farhan Akhtar, the film was first featured in the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.
It will see a worldwide theatrical release on February 28.
