Promoters and organizers can play an encouraging role: Parvaaz

- Vijayalakshmi Narayanan

Their music is not recreation, their music is respite. Since inception in March 2010, Parvaaz has redefined the independent music scene with their soul-stirring compositions replete with thought provoking verses. Coupling blues, rock and psychedelic with Urdu and Kashmiri poetry, the band has truly displayed their ability to produce home-grown contemporary sounds, time and again.Team Radio City Freedom caught up with band members Khalid Ahmed and Mir Kashif Iqbal vocals and guitar Fidel D39souza bass and Sachin Banandur drums and percussions for a quick chat, as positive reviews pour in for their latest singles, 'Shaad' and 'Color White'.How would you describe your latest music video, 'Color White'?Kashif: It deals with a person struggling to subdue his ego. We got the idea of showing the struggle of a man against nature and hence the climb up the mountain. You've opened for British rock out Alt-J in the past and you've recently lent music to a renowned fashion label. Do you think the grass is seemingly greener for the independent music scene?Khalid: As long as bands keep pursuing what they love and are honest in their endeavor, the scene is only gonna get better. You have toured across the length and breadth of our country since inception. What, according to you, is the audience more receptive towards when it comes to your performances?Fidel: This changes from place to place. Some audiences have enjoyed the music, some dig the lyrics and some just give in to the experience as a whole.Recently, there was enough hue and cry over opening acts at the Justin Bieber concert. Do you feel its high time promoters and organizers looked at bringing home-grown talent to the forefront?Sachin: No idea about the Bieber concert. But ya, promoters and organizers can play an encouraging role in bringing out some of the best talents that exist in the country. What's next in the pipeline for the band?Khalid: Working on the second LP and engaging with our fans in the meanwhile.Five independent artistes/outfits we should listen to?Kashif: Indian Ocean, Tajdar Junaid, Skrat, Avial, Blackstrat Blues. You can listen to Parvaaz's latest tracks on Radio City Freedom.
