Even a die-hard Salman Khan fan is likely to question his motive for really wanting to sit through 2 hours and 40 minutes of sheer pointlessness. That is 'Race 3' for you, put in the most polite manner possible. It's understood that a Salman Khan film is only meant to entertain and not really drive a message. But what does one do when even entertainment is in short supply?

'Race 3' happens when 'Hum Saath Saath Hain' meets 'Dhoom'.

The plot, if there is any, features Shamsher Singh (Anil Kapoor) an illegal arms dealer based in the UAE, tasked with a mission to retrieve a hard disk that contains the dirty secrets of India's top politicians, a mission that can cost him and everyone else involved, a fortune. Shamsher trusts his adopted son Sikander, (Salman Khan), to carry out the mammoth task, even as his biological twin children Suraj, (Saqib Saleem) and Sanjana (Daisy Shah), hold their own personal grudges. Bobby Deol plays Yash, the family's trusted bodyguard and Sikander's close friend, while Jacqueline Fernandez plays Jessica, an extended version of every other film role, she's done in her career.

The earlier two installments of 'Race' weren't exceptional films really, given that they were high on style but low on substance. But their biggest strengths were commendable soundtracks and consistent storylines. And that's where the film heavily suffers. Salman himself having penned the lyrics for 'Selfish' and 'I Found Love', doesn't really give us romantic numbers worth remembering that 'Pehli Nazar Mein' or 'Be Intehaan' are. Only 'Allah Duhai Hai' manages to leave a lasting impression thanks to the signature riff, composed by Pritam in the earlier films, which one has come to associate the franchise with. The story, screenplay and dialogues are the film's weakest link. If only a fraction of the budget spent on blowing expensive cars, locations and costumes, was actually spent on the script. Daisy Shah's infamous 'None of your business' is not the only unintentionally hilarious dialogue in the film.

To give credit where its due, the action sequences by Anil Arasu and Thomas Struthers (the man behind the fabulous action sets in 'Tiger Zinda Hai'), are commendable. Never mind that some of them can actually leave you baffled. DOP Ayananka Bose captures the exotic locales of UAE, Thailand and Jammu and Kashmir in all its glory. Music composers Salim-Sulaiman lift the proceedings with their appealing background score, making you wonder why they weren't hired to compose the music instead.

As for the performances, its Anil Kapoor and Salman Khan who do the heavy-lifting. Kapoor Sr. offers a dignifying performance though he deserves better. Salman, on the other hand looking his age, is earnest. Despite all the social media backlash, Daisy Shah is actually sincere. Given a more competent script, she does have the scope to perform better. Bobby Deol, looking smoking hot, is unfortunately saddled with an insignificant role.

To sum this up, if you are looking for content to make memes, then 'Race 3' is for you. This will nevertheless, make its money.
